NEUROFEEDBACK

Neurofeedback, otherwise also known as Neurotherapy and EEG (Electroencephalogram) Biofeedback, is a technology based learning technique that uses a computer to give information to a person about his or her own brainwave pattern in the form of EEG activity, in order to train the person to modify his or her own brainwaves. When the brain is not functioning properly, evidence of this usually shows up in EEG activity. EEG Biofeedback assists a person to alter his or her own brainwave characteristics by challenging the brain to learn to reorganize and function better. The EEG Biofeedback technique is a process in which subtle brainwave information is amplified and shown back to the trainee in the form of a computer game. The object of the training is to re-educate the brain to make voluntary changes via computerized graphic displays and auditory signals that encourage a change in mental state and thus challenge the brain to function more effectively.

The EEG Biofeedback technique has been found to be effective in treating a number of conditions. EEG training is a gradual learning process with full programs taking 20 to 60 sessions. WATCH VIDEO by the Othmer's on Neurofeedback.

EEG Biofeedback falls into two general categories:
  • SMR/Beta training (12-18 Hz) targets disorders of arousal, mood, attention and behavior.
  • Alpha/Theta training (4-12 Hz) augments psychotherapy in the recovery from addictions, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other disorders. Alpha/Theta training can facilitate healing in the psychological domain, or enhance performance, well-being and awareness.
Clinical experience suggests that these two domains of EEG Biofeedback compliment each other and may both be applied in many therapeutic treatments.

Neurofeedback can identify where your brain waves are under or over firing. Then, with the use of a computer, you can learn to retrain your brain to respond efficiently. Similar to techniques used to train a dog or cat, called operant condition. Through the use of computer games and graphics, you can train your brain to respond to its best ability.

Using computerized biofeedback equipment and capitalizing on recent scientific research that illustrates the profound plasticity of the brain, The Brain Fitness Team works with individuals to utilize their brain frequencies to the maximum effectiveness. This exercise strengthens the brain and the rest of the nervous system, with powerful effects on the entire body.
Applications for Brain Fitness will improve the following:
  • Concentration
  • Short Term Memory
  • Ability to Focus
  • Recall
  • Remembering what you just heard

Problems with sleeping

There is clinical evidence that EEG Biofeedback training assists a variety of sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea, as well as other sleep problems like difficulty falling asleep, waking up often, etc. which are symptoms associated with states of anxiety and depression. Training with EEG Biofeedback has been shown to assist in normalizing brain self-regulation of physiological arousal and because of this; the first reported signs of change upon initiating EEG training is improvement in the quality of sleep.
Peak Mental Performance

EEG Biofeedback training has been used for a number of years in assisting a variety of client groups such as golfers, sports people, corporate executives and military personnel, to reach higher levels of mental performance. The training protocols address issues of physiological arousal, focus and attention, brain hemispheric balance, relaxation and executive function. EEG Biofeedback is a learning technique and training tool. The client will become aware of the changes being brought about with the training, and will be able to verify the progress toward a greater level of competency by periodic testing to validate such progress.
What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is the state of the art therapeutic training tool that is used to improve a variety of health conditions or improve personal performance.

Through the use of computer technology and electroencephalogram (EEG) it is now possible to monitor and "feedback" information to the brain about its activities.
How Does It Work?

Sensors are applied to specific areas of the scalp and ears. These sensors transmit brain wave activity to an EEG which measures and records the frequencies.

During Neurofeedback the patient effectively "plays" a video game using his/her brain to reach the mental state in which the desired brain wave is achieved. When the desired brain wave is reached, the brain is "rewarded" and learns to direct itself towards a more desirable performance level.
What type of equipment do you use to assess the brain?

As for our equipment, we have the most current, scientific, state of the art equipment, which is similar to the equipment used at MIT to map the brain of the Dalai Lama. I can't say absolutely that we have the identical equipment since there are over 20 manufacturers of brain mapping equipment. However, know the quality is the same. The brain produces electrical activity from 0 hz-64 hz. Dr. Barry Sterman figured out that at different frequency affects different mental and physical responses.

0-4 hz = Delta Wave is seen in deep sleep, excess or location seen trauma, and intuitive people, also referred to as our unconscious thinking
4-8 hz = Theta Wave is seen in waking or falling asleep, also seen as reflective or creative thinking and also referred to as our subconscious thinking.
8-12-hz = Alpha Wave is seen in mental stillness. It is like being in neutral gear, inner peace and quiet, which is the place that allows you to go from your intuitive, creative mind to your present beta mind.
12-15hz - Lo Beta Wave, also called SMR or Beta1, is seen as physical stillness. It is when the body moves fluidly without thought or effort.
15-20 hz - Beta Wave, also called Beta 2, is seen with logical thinking, focused mind.
20-32 hz - High Beta Wave, also called Beta 3, is seen in hypervigilance, extreme anxiety and PTSD
32-64 hz - Gamma Wave is seen in high intellectual integrative processing.

Also, where these waves are located in the brain determines when you are in the zone or at your peak performance.

Thus, by looking at what level each brain wave is at and where it is located you can enhance specific brain waves to help increase focus, concentration, inner physical and mental stillness, and help people sleep better. Therefore, brain fitness training helps you to optimum mental, physical and spiritual ability.
Neurofeedback Training

Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation. It teaches your brain to get back on track. Self-regulation is necessary for optimal brain function. Neurofeedback training enhances the function of the central nervous system and thereby improves mental performance, emotional control and physiological stability.

In Neurofeedback we concern ourselves with variability of brainwave frequencies in the central nervous system and brain rather than with chemical imbalances or psychiatric conditions. Neurofeedback speaks the language of the brain, to the brain. The brain uses visual and auditory information to re-organize itself and release old patterns of "stuckness". While clients use Neurofeedback for many reasons, they typically describe their concerns and fears dropping away, feeling more clear and present in their daily lives, and experiencing a greater ability for focus and awareness.
How effective is Neurofeedback training?

Neurofeedback training is very effective. The training’s efficacy has been proven by over 300 controlled studies throughout the world.
What Happens in a Neurofeedback Session?

Sensors are attached to the scalp with EEG paste which then pick up brain waves. It is painless and does not involve the application of any voltage or current to the brain, so it is entirely non-invasive.

A computer processes the brain waves and extracts certain information from them. The ebb and flow of your brainwaves are shown to you in the form a video game or shifting video display. The specific brainwave frequencies rewarded and the sensor locations on the scalp are unique to each individual.

While you’re sitting back in a comfortable recliner, the sensors that have we have placed on your scalp track your ability to enter the state of relaxation. For thirty minutes, you will listen to feedback and watch a screen as the software detects changes in your EEG.
What changes can I expect from Neurofeedback training?

This Neurofeedback process of learning reinforces optimal brainwave states through the use of advanced technology. When the client voluntarily produces desirable brainwave patterns (those associated with higher levels of attention, focus, and mental relaxation) these patterns are rewarded and reinforced. This process is called "feedback" because it informs the client of their success in making the desired brainwave changes at a given moment. In this process, they learn strategies and quieting techniques that will ultimately be used without the computerized feedback.
